Memo from President Duane O'Neill and Chairman Bill Farmer

RELIEF AID FOR SOUTH MISSISSIPPI CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

Mississippians can be proud of the way everyone has come together during the disaster called Katrina.  In the early days after the hurricane, Mississippians were joined by people from across the nation and around the world in the humanitarian relief effort that continues even today.  While the road back is long, the emphasis has begun to move from survival and shelter to pursuing employment that provides a livelihood for one’s family.  For this to happen, the business community must become operational and offer those opportunities to employees.  Chambers of Commerce have a huge and important task before them to help the business community rebuild.  However, our fellow Chambers on the Gulf Coast and other affected areas in south Mississippi basically lost everything themselves.  Most of the Coast Chamber Offices were completely destroyed by Katrina.  Many employees of the Chambers lost their personal homes just like everyone else.  Chambers are business organizations and primarily financed by local business firms. In many cases these businesses unfortunately don’t have the ability to rebuild plus fund the local Chambers of Commerce.  That is where we can help.

Through our national organization of Chamber professionals, ACCE, we are raising relief funds for those Chambers.  Over eleven hundred Chambers across the nation are being asked for an appropriate financial donation.  As we are all aware, our neighboring state of Louisiana was hit hard as well.  Some of the monies raised nationwide will go to those affected areas. However, any money raised in Mississippi can be earmarked to stay in our state.

Your MetroJackon Chamber is working with the Mississippi Economic Council and ACCE to promote the raising of funds as well as the distribution. One very important fact is that every penny of every dollar contributed goes directly to those chambers in need. There are no administrative costs related to this effort. One hundred percent goes to those in need.

Your Chamber Executive Committee approved $5000.00 to go toward the relief effort.  The ChamberPlus Board matched that amount allowing us to pledge a total of  $10,000.00.

You can help also.  We realize so many of you have already given to other worthy institutions associated with the recovery from the hurricane. However, if you haven’t and were looking for a great means to be involved, we hope you will add your contribution to the Chamber’s initial pledge.  Perhaps you have given already but this endeavor to help our sister business organizations sounds like something additional you could do; please know it will be very appreciated.

If you are able to help, the Chamber wants to make the process easy for you.  To that end, we would ask that if any of you want to contribute any amount, please call Tyler Armstrong or Lindsay James at 601-948-7575.  They will be able to answer any questions you may have and inform you how your contribution can be tax deductible. Please make checks payable to CGEF Chamber Katrina Relief and mail to the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership , P.O. Box 22548, Jackson, MS  39225-2548.

Mississippians, especially you the Metro Community, are so generous to those in need.  We thank you for your consideration of this deserving request.
