Healthy Jackson Update

Tyler Lott Armstrong, Executive Vice President

HealthyJackson: Taking steps to a healthier community

Chronic diseases - long-lasting illnesses or conditions, such as heart disease, asthma, mental illness, cancer, and diabetes – are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.  In Hinds County, nearly 100,000 people suffer from at least one chronic disease.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Taking control of your health through a healthy diet and regular exercise can prevent or delay the onset of most chronic diseases and reduce the effects of depression.

The program is called HealthyJackson, and its mission is to reduce the burden of chronic disease on the Jackson community by educating the people of Jackson about key health and wellness tools.

On Tuesday, June 20th, at 4:30 p.m. the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership will be hosting the “Be Healthy at Work” kickoff.  This event is designed to educate business leaders on ways to reduce employee down time and fatigue, through programs designed for the work place.  Remember, that both physical and mental health are crucial in the workplace.

By visiting the user-friendly Web site, www.HealthyJackson.org, residents can track their progress towards eating and exercise goals, use a free health assessment tool to understand their health and risk factors for chronic disease, and find out about local health screenings, nutrition, and fitness events in the Jackson area.

Call the toll-free number 1-866-HLTHJX (1-866-458-4959) to order a free HealthyJackson membership kit complete with fun ideas for fitness, nutrition, and healthy living.  These kits can also be ordered online.

Please join us next Tuesday the 20th, 4:30 p.m. at the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership , 201 South President Street.  Let’s join the fight for a healthier Jackson by becoming a member of HealthyJackson today!

Regional Employers Council To Meet on June 27, 2006

This is your invitation to participate in the activities of the Regional Employer’s Council.

During the Chamber’s recent strategic planning process, it was recommended that the former Area Employers Council be upgraded and open to all interested chamber members instead of being limited to upper level investors. Stony Thomas of Nissan America will be serving as the chairman of the newly organized council, which will be called the Regional Employer’s Council.

The first meeting of the new Regional Employer’s Council has been scheduled

for 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 27, in the Alvis T. Hunt Community Development Room of the MetroJackson Chamber. A light lunch will be served.

The Regional Employer’s Council will focus on issues that affect the employer’s bottom line, including workforce development and many other concerns. The agenda for the organizational meeting on June 27 will include brief reports on 2006 legislation dealing with firearms in employee vehicles and the liability of employing off-duty police officers.  Other topics will be violence prevention in the workplace, funding for workforce training, sharing of common employer concerns, and discussion of future program topics.

Please RSVP to lslater@metrochamber.com by Thursday, June 22.

Battle of the Banks

WE NEED YOU!

The MetroJackson Chamber will be kicking off a 3-day campaign blitz - "Battle of the Banks" beginning Tuesday, June 27th and ending at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 29th.

We are asking that all metro area banks that participated in the 2005 "Bowl Championship Series" put a team together and assist us in signing up some new members during this time.  Our goal is to recruit 100 new members during this "blitz!"  We will be offering some GREAT incentives for prospective members, plus we will be recognizing the TOP corporate team and the TOP 3 volunteers!  We had over 150 volunteers that participated last year and did an outstanding job!

Please contact Debi Green, Membership Consultant at 601-948-7575, or email at djackson@metrochamber.com to let her know if your bank will participate in this 3-day blitz.

Thank you for your support of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership .  We appreciate YOU!
