Memo from President Duane O'Neill

MEMORIAL DAY COMES AND GOES, BUT IS NOT FORGOTTEN

Many times after a Holiday weekend, we get immediately back  into our daily routine of life.  As in the past, Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer.  It’s a busy time and usually that means the three day weekend has come and gone-but not this year.  Actually this holiday has had a special significance for many people for many years.  Unfortunately, its significance is most felt by those who have experienced the sacrifice that this Holiday observes. This year is no exception.

Sunday’s Clarion-Ledger ran a two-page tribute to those who have given the supreme sacrifice while serving in the Middle East to preserve our freedom.  Just last week, four soldiers lost their lives on May 23rd in an incident near Haswa, Iraq.  The families of these young men are experiencing a pain beyond my imagination.  However, this war is not just about Iraq, or Afghanistan.  Our men and women are in that distant land to protect the freedom you and I enjoy right here in Mississippi.  It is a freedom that we too often take for granted.

My thoughts today are not only on those that made the supreme sacrifice, but all those who have served.  I think of fellow businessman Kenny Windham and Jackson City Councilman Marshand Crisler, who are among those that have left the comfortable surroundings of our Metro area and served our country in Iraq.  Needless to say I think of young men like Matt Briggs of Brandon, and my son Steven O’Neill who are with the 1st of the 25th Infantry Division in Mosal.  They, like those that have gone before them in this war, or Korea, or Vietnam, or the World Wars of the twentieth century, are very special persons.

Yes, this Tuesday morning after a holiday weekend is still very sober.  Reflecting on the service and sacrifice of these heroes truly puts life in perspective.  If I ever complain about going to another humdrum meeting, or anguish over the necessity of attending another evening reception, I will be ashamed of myself when I remember what these "true heroes" did/and continue to do for me and you each and everyday that we live in this Free and Wonderful United States of America.  Say a prayer for each of these Heroes.
