CITY VISITATION

RECOMMENDATION FORTHCOMING

The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership continues to move forward on the “City Visitation Initiative.” After prioritizing the major issues in our community, your board of directors began searching to find a community similar to Metro Jackson. The Board was looking for a metropolitan area that had successfully dealt with many of the same challenges that exist in Metro Jackson.  Many of you suggested cities for us to research in our mission to find a suitable match.  For this purpose, we formed a task force charged with selecting our partner city. This group has unanimously chosen Richmond, Virginia, and their choice will be submitted to the Executive Committee at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

Richmond seems to be an excellent choice.  It definitely has a success story to share in the area of regional cooperation, which was our number one priority issue. Richmond has been highly successful with its waterfront development projects and its downtown revitalization.  The partnership of business and elected leadership, especially as it relates to transportation, education and public safety are intriguing venues for us to study.  Additionally, the bond between the Richmond community and Virginia Commonwealth University is similar to the current and future partnership we enjoy with the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Our key community issues are very much like the ones Richmond has so successfully tackled. Another important parallel is the demographic composition of Metro Jackson and Richmond. Both cities are state capitals, and while Richmond sits at the core of a much larger population, the adjoining communities encompassing its metro area mirror many of the same characteristics of our own suburban municipalities.

Richmond does not claim to have all the answers. They admit that the challenges of public safety and other goals are a work in progress.  Likewise, we understand that all communities are different and we are not expecting the Richmond plan to be a perfect fit for Metro Jackson.  From their success story we expect to glean ideas and to gain insight so that we are able to create our own unique plan for overcoming obstacles to positive growth.  The task force has thoroughly researched this matter and next week the Executive Committee will discuss and take action on their recommendations.  As always, we appreciate your input and comments regarding this City Visitation Initiative.

Chamber Graduates 13th Class of Young Leaders

A graduation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 5:30 p.m., at Old Central High School Building in downtown Jackson, in honor of the thirty-six Youth Leadership Jackson participants of this year’s class. State college and university representatives have been invited to participate in a college fair following the graduation ceremony.

Designed to inspire and develop young citizens of the Metro Jackson area, Youth Leadership Jackson is a program of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership .

Each year, a group of forty high school students are selected among their peers to participate in the six-month program that trains, motivates, and increases awareness of issues and concerns of the community.  Monthly sessions are held to address healthcare, business, economics, quality of life, education and criminal issues. Leadership skills, character building and community culture are also key components of the training.

Although the Youth Leadership Board of Governors is proud of what this program does for the youth in the community, it is still looking for constructive ways to retain students in the metro Jackson area to take advantage of local college institutions and long-term employment. The current Board, led by Don Lewis of Internal Revenue Service, will be exploring options to address this important concept.

Upon graduation, Belhaven College offers incentives to the graduates of the program while other local schools and universities are asked to consider the same level of participation.

Applications are accepted in late August.  Contact your school or Shirley Tucker @ 601-948-7575.
