Leadership Jackson Update

Shirley Tucker, Executive Director

The Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership strongly embraces the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association by permitting its office to perform administrative duties for the organization.    With that in mind, I am deferring my column to Shauna Yeldell, President of the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association, to comment on the organization’s progress to date.

Officers and representatives of the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association include: Carolyn Dennis, Al Underwood, Cynthia Buchanan, Gloria Hervey, John Hardy, Rita Wray, Mike Larsen, Shauna Yeldell, Jeff Good, Earnest Hart, Cheryl Green, Meade Mitchell, Karen Livingston-Wilson, Susan Lunardini, Geilia Henry, Karen Quay

We now find ourselves in the middle of a great fiscal year within the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association.  I continue to be amazed at the caliber of leaders within our organization.

During the fall, our Diversity Committee led by Vangela Wade, organized and held our Fall Roundtable titled “ Violence Stereotypes and African Americans in the News”.  This interactive discussion included panelists: Maggie Wade-Dixon, News Anchor at WLBT,   Ronnie Agnew, Executive Editor of the Clarion Ledger, Dr. Judith Lyons, Clinical Psychologist at the G.V. Sonny Montgomery V.A. Medical Center, Edward St. Pe’, a local TV/ Radio personality and Dr. Leslie B. McLemore, Councilman for the City of Jackson.  This group of panelist led an energized dialogue that helped members  understand the inner workings of the television and print media.  Also, this roundtable helped us understand why some of the decisions are made as it relates to what we see and read each day.

As we entered the Holiday season and reflected on the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina, we were reminded of just how much we have to be thankful for.  On behalf of  the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association, I  would like to thank one of our founders, Mr. Howard Catchings and his lovely wife, Danella Catchings for hosting our Christmas Social in their beautiful home in North Jackson. And of course, the event would not have been possible without Jeff Good and the Broad Street Bakery staff.    The combined hospitality was nothing short of gracious and we were led into the Christmas season with merriment and great anticipation.

Moving forward with the second half of the fiscal year, we will again have many opportunities to showcase the leadership of Metro Jackson.

The newly formed Health and Wellness Committee led by Karen Livingston-Wilson will be sponsoring events that create an opportunity for LJ Alumni to improve the health and wellness of the Metro Jackson community.   There will also be other roundtable discussions as well as the graduation ceremony of the current class.  It will continue to be a great year for Leadership Jackson.

The year 2006 is a very significant year within Leadership Jackson because the organization will celebrate its 20th year anniversary.  This event, sponsored by the Leadership Jackson Association, without question will be one of the most memorable in our history.

My challenge remains . . .  No Reserves . . .  No Regrets. . .  No Return

No Reserves:  Never have reservations about trying something new.

No Regrets:   Never regret an opportunity to serve those in our community.

No Return:    Never return to what has been but only what can be.

Shauna Dilworth Yeldell, President

Leadership Jackson Alumni Association

Revision to Last Week's Notice on Funds for Workforce Training

Workforce training funds for the state fiscal year ending June 30, 2006 have already been utilized or committed.  At this time, funds for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2006, are expected to be available.  However, legislative appropriations have not yet been finalized and some of these funds could be diverted to other uses as a result of Hurricane Katrina.  For the latest in fund availability, call the Workforce Training Coordinator at your local community college.

Dear Chamber members, supporters and friends:

I am very excited to tell you about a new publishing venture that the
Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership is embarking on with fellow Chamber
member, and well-known local publisher, Jack Criss.

Reflections magazine will be published this May and will be a unique
and beneficial showcasing of all our tri-county area has to offer. Jack
approached me with the idea of doing a joint publishing project several
months ago and I was convinced: our community needs a glossy,
full-color, locally-produced and written publication; this is what
Reflections will be.

We will publish and distribute some 15,000 copies of Reflections and
initial editorial projections show the magazine to run anywhere between
150 and 200 pages. The content of Reflections will include overview
articles, profiles and features on: Business and Economic Development;
Education; Culture; Health Care; Real Estate...and much, much more. In
addition, beautiful photography—all showcasing the wonders and leaders
of the Metro area—will be featured throughout all of Reflections. We
will also publish an updated business and industry listing in
Reflections, the first time the Chamber has done so in five years.

Part business development piece, part newcomer's guide, part community
profile...and showcasing the whole Metro region
throughout...Reflections magazine will be unlike any publication you
have ever seen. I am proud to partner with Jack and Metro Mississippi
Business Publications, Inc. to launch and endorse this momentous and
historical project. I ask that you consider working with us, both
editorially and through advertising, as we set the wheels in motion for
the May debut of MetroJackson Reflections magazine.

Soon, a representative will be contacting you about Reflections to
explain how you can work with us. We look forward to receiving your
input and support as we take a major step in promoting and highlighting
this wonderful part of Mississippi we call home. In the meantime, feel
free to contact me Duane, at 601-948-7575 or Jack at 601-366-1010 with
any questions you may have.

Thank you.
Sincerely,

Duane O'Neill
