Memo from President Duane O'Neill

NEW LEADERS, OLD PROBLEMS, AND A MUCH BIGGER PICTURE

This past Sunday’s Clarion-Ledger featured stories comparing Richmond, Virginia, and Jackson, Mississippi.  The different articles were interesting and well written.  Your Chamber did much research before choosing Richmond as the destination of our first “City Visitation” venture.  Our leadership saw the numerous similar issues the two communities face.  Also, it was evident that Richmond is a few years ahead of us in dealing with these challenges, and therefore the opportunity to learn from their experience is extremely attractive.  Those issues of public safety, housing, waterfront development, and downtown revitalization were well captured in the Clarion-Ledger’s report.  However, there was one key focus point that was overlooked in the Sunday paper that leads readers to miss the “vantage point” from which the Chamber leadership will approach the fact finding visit to Virginia.

The number one identified issue driving the City Visitation effort to Richmond is regionalismRichmond and its surrounding suburban communities have done quite well in building relationships and working together on the projects mentioned above.  In fact, the success achieved was due in large part to the cooperative spirit of the entire metro Richmond area.  We acknowledge that this same mindset is imperative to success in our community.

Therefore the trip to Richmond will not be about how to “fix” Jackson, but rather how can we all come together to make this tri-county area the best it can be.  This means understanding that Jackson is not the only problem and the surrounding communities cannot become islands on to themselves.   Jackson needs the suburbs and the suburbs need Jackson.   Richmond and Chesterfield County and Hanover County and Henrico County understood this during their revival period.  Jackson is tremendously important, but trying to “fix” just Jackson would be disastrous.  We must not think of our area as 185,000 people, but instead as a metro community of 512,000.  It is only when we bring the resources of the entire metro community together can we achieve the success that a Greater Richmond region attained.

Under the Clarion-Ledger headline of “New Leaders, Old Problems”, I see the “New Leader” in a number of faces, but primarily Frank Melton.   However, the “old problems” to me are not just housing, public safety and downtown revitalization.  They are more about how we can best rally people and resources from inside and outside the City of Jackson into a coordinated effort to make the region prosperous.  I believe Frank is a leader to do just that.  With the help of Chamber leaders, Bill Farmer and Eddie Maloney working with others-including but not limited to Mary Hawkins-Butler, Gene McGee, Fred Esco, Rosemary Aultman, Gary Rhoads, Jimmy Foster, Carlo Martella, Mark Scarborough, Larry Swales, Andy Taggart and George Smith-this endeavor will be successful.

I am so excited about the new dates for the trip, which are now planned for January 29th-31st.  I hope that you share this excitement, and that you will make plans to join us and our friends from the Clarion-Ledger for this historic trip.
