Compiled
350,000
Served in Mississippi Following Katrina
The
Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service has
compiled a comprehensive number of volunteers
who have worked on Hurricane Katrina related
projects over the past year. Whole
acknowledging that volunteers continue to work
on the MS Gulf Coast, the MCVS is pleased to
announce that as of the first anniversary of
Hurricane Katrina, the number of volunteers who
have worked tirelessly for Mississippi over the
past twelve months is over 350,000. This
"official" number comes from information gathers
from the white House, local and national
non-profits, faith-based groups, and a wide
variety on non-affiliated groups. After
August 21, 2006, this official number will be
posted at
www.MCVS.org.
MCVS has
complied the Mississippi volunteer number in
conjunction with the THANKS Y'ALL / VOLUNTEER
Y'ALL! Campaign, which honors and marks the
first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
"It is important that the nation and the world
realize the enormous impact that volunteers had
on the relief and recovery work in Mississippi,"
said Marsha Meeks Kelly, Executive Director of
MCVS. "While we recognize the tireless
efforts of volunteers over the past year, it is
equally important to emphasize that hundreds of
thousands of volunteers are still needed for the
recovery efforts. Please do not forget
us."
The mission
of Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service
is to engage and support Mississippians of all
ages and backgrounds in service to their
communities. As the state office of
volunteerism, MCVS oversees AmeriCorps,
community-based Learn and Serve America

MS Gulf
Coast School Relief
Here is an easy way to help
schools and libraries on the
Gulf Coast rebuild. The shelves
are still bare in many of those
towns, so now is a great time
to get involved. Click on this
website and go to the right hand
side which says, "Purchase Books
to help a school Library on the
Gulf Coast". Any amount is
accepted. How easy is that?
