Questions and Answers

1. What is YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON? YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON is a six-month leadership program for high school sophomores and juniors in Metro Jackson and is designed to expose young leaders to the various elements that form a strong and dynamic Capital City. It is a program of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership.

2. Who governs the program? The YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON Board of Governors functions as the policy planning body and is responsible to the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership Board of Directors. The program is coordinated by a Program Director at the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership.

3. How much does it cost? There is no cost to the participant. YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON only requires an investment in time, energy, and enthusiasm. A $100 processing fee will be charged to the school if a class member is chosen from that school. The remaining cost of the program is funded by the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership and from contributions from individuals and businesses in Metro Jackson.

4. How many participants will be selected each year? Approximately 40 class members will be selected from the 49 high schools in Hinds, Madison and Rankin Counties.

5. How are the participants selected? Using the objectives of YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON as a guide, the YLJ Selection Committee will review all the applications and choose a group of finalists to be interviewed after school. After interviewing the finalists, the class of approximately 40 participants will be selected. All applicants will be notified in writing of the Selection Committee's decision. Applications will remain confidential.

6. How long will applications be accepted? The deadline for submitting applications is October 3.

7. Will credit be given for participation? It is anticipated that each student's participation will be listed on his/her transcript for higher education purposes. Also, each participant will be given an attendance form verifying their attendance at each session of the program.

8. Will I receive a college scholarship when I complete the program? In the previous classes, all YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON graduates received a scholarship to Belhaven College. All scholarship awards are at the discretion of the awarding institution of higher learning. YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON does not guarantee a scholarship award at the end of the program year.

9. Will parents be included in the program? Yes. In order for YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON to be a success, parents must feel comfortable and secure with YOUTH LEADERSHIP JACKSON. Parents will be included in as many activities as they choose.
